Sappho of Lesbos Circa 630 B.C

One of the great Greek lyrists and few known female poets of the ancient world, Sappho was born some time between 630 and 612 BC. Her birthplace gave rise to "Lesbian" as an erotic term.

The Tomb of Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep

Buried in joint tomb in Saqqara provided by Pharaoh Niusere, wall paintings depict them in intimate embrace, describe them as "Joined in life and joined in death." It was revealed that this unique tomb had been built for two men to cohabit and that both shared identical titles in the palace of King Niuserre of the Fifth Dynasty: "Overseer of the manicurist in the palace of the king."

Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands: Studies of African Homosexualities

Among the many myths created about Africa, the myth that homosexuality is absent or incidental is one of the oldest and most enduring. Historians, anthropologists, and many contemporary Africans alike have denied or overlooked African same-sex patterns or claimed that such patterns were introduced by Europeans. Among African Americans questions surrounding sexuality and gender in traditional African societies have become especially contentious. In fact, same-sex love was and is widespread in Africa.
